Which of the following five assumptions are you making about the illness known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)? Read on to discover how critical the right attitude is and why you can't afford to make such a mistake in attitude. These wrong assumptions could hurt you exponentially by producing damaging health consequences.

When a person first gets (a.k.a "comes down with") Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and, for today's purpose let's assume that's you, everything about your world feels confusing. One minute you're merrily skipping along and enjoying a robust level of health; the next, you're quite ill and can barely whip out a laundry-sized list of complaints to prove your infirmity.

Any one symptom may be tough to handle. Mix several of the rougher ones together and it may seem that you're treading deep water. Your symptom load can feel overwhelming and add to your increasing sense of confusion, anxiety and frustration.

Now, assuming that you don't want to continue living like this, ask yourself, "How are you going to get a handle on these health issues and begin to get well?" Beyond the simple advice of take it easy and rest, eat well and lower your stress level, what are you going to do?

Special Tip #1: Don't jump at the first answers you find and make wrong assumptions about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Wrong information can come from seemingly credible sources such as what you hear from cousin Sally or what you're reading in someone's personal blog/ complaint tirade. Mis-information can come in all forms and from seemingly knowledgeable, well-meaning sources.

Know that your maintaining a positive attitude about getting well is the "first key" to improving your health and probably the most essential element to making it happen. After doing thorough research, base your plan of action and your attitude on the absolute best information that you can find and what feels right for you down in your gut. Gut instinct is important.

Now let's examine these FIVE HARMFUL ASSUMPTIONS and guard against them:

FIRST ASSUMPTION: Because Chronic Fatigue Syndrome feels like such a physical illness, it must have a physically-based cause.

There is no proof of that statement. All traditional medical researchers can say are two things: 1) people who suffer with CFS often have additional illnesses like Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, or Lupus, and 2) that many people with CFS often exhibit more than one infection, such as when a dysfunctional immune system allows the existence of viruses like Herpes Virus-6 (HHV-6), Epstein Barr Virus (Mononucleosis), Coxsackie Virus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and more. Truly, when your Immune System becomes totally confused and dysfunctional, almost anything is possible.

And to date, not one of these medical experts can tell you whether the viruses come first and cause CFS or whether your already weakened Immune System allows the invaders to get a foothold. The only thing clear is that once this happens, your body can descend into long term illness while fighting but never completely conquering the invaders. This mystery is truly an age-old chicken-and-egg question. We're left wondering which part comes first, the disease process or the symptoms. Maybe, in the end it doesn't matter and here's an important reason why.

If you assume that there must be a physical cause for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, you may get mired in that line of thinking. Wrong or right, you assume this is the best way to approach the problem and you stop looking further. You don't consider other possibilities, such as causes originating from a mind/body/spirit origin. This wrong assumption can be a huge mistake and unfortunately you've made it at the very beginning!

Special Tip #2: Keep your brain working and your heart open to the answers. You will figure out why you got sick.

SECOND ASSUMPTION: The number of intense CFS symptoms is so overwhelming, you feel as if you can't manage them. They are more than you can bear.

This type of assumption lends itself to a type of permitted weakness, because in thinking this way, you essentially are giving up control. Yes, you may have a lot of symptoms, but each one can be addressed. Note: Many people feel the need to take strong prescription drugs for symptom relief, but those very drugs can cause other problems and add to your misery. Be careful of the number of drugs you take and which specific ones you use. Work closely with your doctor.

Special Tip #3: You already have enough problems and symptoms to deal with. Don't make things worse by allowing drug side effects or dangerous interactions to create more health problems.

If you approach your illness symptoms one by one and explore more natural solutions that won't produce negative results, very likely you can avoid an out-of-control spiral of symptoms.

THIRD ASSUMPTION: Because it's been such a long time since scientists and researchers began looking for answers and they still have very few, you believe you're probably doomed to suffer with CFS indefinitely. Chances are... you won't ever feel well again.

Now that's the thinking of someone who's already defeated. It's obvious how wrong it is when you look at this assumption in black and white words. Find a way to change that belief and you'll have plenty of room for hope and healing again.

Special Tip #4:
Don't give up. Don't even think about it.

FOURTH ASSUMPTION: Because CFS is such a multi-faceted illness and is so misunderstood and puzzling, there is no way for you to understand what's going on.

Wow, is that a lie! Yes, you may suffer with cognitive dysfunction like brain fog or memory loss, but somewhere in all of the muck and mire, you're there. Your soul is still present and accounted for. It wants to prevail. Your heart wants healing to happen.

Special Tip #5: Be brave. Keep your wits about you and proceed onward. Don't plow up this mine field alone if you can't handle it. Don't be afraid to ask for help from a loved one, friend or caretaker.

FIFTH ASSUMPTION: That you're stuck living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome forever until someone else finds the cause and cure.

The truth is science may not find the answer to everyone's case of CFS, but with a little help and fortitude, you can figure out your own. Realize that the Creator made you to be a very intelligent and resourceful human being. He created within you innate healing knowledge. It may have been pushed down a little, but it has not gone away. It's still there and it's still accessible!

Special Tip #6, the Best Tip of All: Your body already knows how to get well from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It may have forgotten for the moment, but somewhere deep down inside, it knows. If you really, really believe that you can heal, you are thinking correctly and headed in a positive direction!

o sensibilidad a olores, ruido, luz, medicamentos, alimentos

o terapia Mineral: calcio, magnesio y manganeso.

Can chronic fatigue syndrome actually be helped by supplying your body with more nutrients? There may never be a definitive answer to this question, but there are several experts in the medical community that are starting to suggest that a deficiency of some vitamins as well as minerals may be one of the largest contributors to this very difficult syndrome. If you suffer from this disorder, you may have tried everything on the market, but perhaps the real hope will lie in some very basic nutrients.

If you do suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, it is anything but a syndrome to you. It is very real, you have lost your desire to do most of all or your regular activities, and it seems like you have flulike symptoms most of the time. You may also be having a difficult time concentrating as well as remembering things.

What is it?

Chronic fatigue syndrome, also referred to a CFS, is considered to be one of the most mysterious disorders the medical community has ever tried to help. It is considered to be a very complicated disorder that results in not only fatigue, but extreme fatigue, and can be exasperated even further by any type of exercise. And to compound this disorder even further, even long periods of rest does not seem to bring any type of relief. There are numerous theories on what the actual cause is, but they are still just that; theories, as no one can seem to find the actual cause.

The symptoms caused by chronic fatigue syndrome are also extremely difficult to measure and because of this, it was not considered an actual medical condition until just recently. In fact, it was considered to be a condition that might just be in your head, as the saying would go, but now it is finally being treated as the very serious disorder that it is. There are several different symptoms that this disorder will show, and the medical community has now identified eight official symptoms.

These symptoms include fatigue, a sore throat, painful and slightly enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or arm areas, as well as memory loss and the inability to concentrate. They also include headaches that can easily increase in severity, pain that seems to literally jump from joint to joint, extreme exhaustion that will last for several hours, and absolutely no relief from this exhaustion with extended hours of sleep. However, even though these are the official symptoms, there can also be several others.

They can include stomach pain, a sudden development of allergies to several things, a chronic cough, as well as dizziness and possible fainting. Chronic fatigue syndrome can also cause dry mouth, earaches, jaw pain, chills, shortness of breath, as well as visual problems just to name a few. There are also some other very troubling facts about this disorder; the long term effects it can have. Some people may recover completely and never have it return, while in other people it will do the complete opposite as it will increase in intensity.

Chronic fatigue syndrome also has one other very mysterious fact; it affects women at also most a four to one ratio. It can and does affect men, but for some reason it attacks women much more frequently.

Vitamins and Minerals:

Chronic fatigue syndrome has a list of potential causes that include viral infections, depression, iron deficiency anemia, problems with your immune system, as well as several others. But the sad truth about this disorder is that as of now, the medical community simply has no answer to what causes it. However, there is some growing consensus that there are some vitamins and minerals that may be able to not only help to reduce the effects; they may actually be able to stop it before it ever attacks.

The first nutrient is the mineral magnesium. Magnesium is a critical to your cells for the production of energy and there have been several studies that have shown that people with chronic fatigue syndrome had low levels of magnesium in their blood. Once they were given injections of this mineral, over 80 percent showed immediate improvement. However, blood levels can be deceiving, because magnesium, much like potassium, is pumped into your cells but if something is interfering with this process, blood levels may appear normal but your cells are not receiving the amounts needed to produce energy.

Most people that suffer from CFS have some type of an enzyme deficiency that can affect this process. Magnesium has been used for several years to treat muscle aches and the most effective form is considered to be magnesium glycinate, as it absorbs in your gastrointestinal tract much more effectively which reduces most stomach irritations.

The B-complex vitamins are next on the list of nutrients that may help with chronic fatigue syndrome as they are extremely affective in supporting your adrenal glands, which are often attacked by this disorder.

This complex of vitamins is also very important to your central nervous system, and if it is operating at full capacity, it is able to handle stress quite easily. If it not, even the slightest of issues can trigger stress, and in turn, trigger this disorder. However, perhaps the single most effective of the B-class of vitamins is B12. Vitamin B12 deficiency has long been associated with fatigue, and B12 injections are often given as a treatment for fatigue.

This form of treatment is also used with fibromyalgia but some doctors consider injections to be somewhat old fashioned. If this is the case, there are other very effective options including a liquid sublingual formula of vitamin B12. This liquid form absorbs into your body at a 90 percent ratio and is considered just as effective as a B12 injection.

The next on the list of nutrients is Coenzyme Q10, which is a supplement that is not well known and although it is not a vitamin, its chemical makeup is very similar to vitamins E and K. It is member of the antioxidant family, and is very rapidly growing in popularity for its ability to help protect your body tissues from damages that are caused by free radicals.

Free radicals literally steal electrons from your cells so they can balance themselves, and when this occurs, it not only makes you tired, it can easily cause extreme fatigue Your body can manufacture this nutrient, but it suggested that a deficiency of Coenzyme Q10 limits your cells ability to convert protein, fat, and carbohydrates into energy.

Summary:

Chronic fatigue syndrome has finally been accepted by the medical community for what it is; a very serious set of disorders. Although there are still no actual known causes or treatments, these groups of nutrients, especially in liquid form, may make the difference in gaining your strength and energy back.

I am an avid lover of pets and my wife and I have had several pets throughout our years. We are especially fond of dogs, and we have a 12 year old Dalmatian (our 3rd) and a "mutt" that we rescued when someone threw him away to die in a vacant field. He found us, nearly starved to death, and weighed about 2 pounds. After severe bouts of mange and severe dehydration, and over 1,000.00 in veterinarian bills, we saved the little guys life, and he is one of the best, if not the best, dogs we have ever had and today is a muscular, fit, and firm 70 pound best friend. After finishing my MBA, which at middle age was not easy, I decided to keep the research work ethics that I acquired, and devote about two hours each night in understanding the health benefits of supplementation for both humans and pets and how they might strengthen our, as well as our pets, immune system in a pre-emptive approach to health rather than a reactionary approach. Both of my daughters are avid cat lovers, and asked me to help them with health concerns and challenges with their cats.

I am not a veterinarian nor claim to be, just a lover of pets that loves to research and pass on some knowledge that might be helpful, or at least stimulating to the thought process. Several of the articles that I have written can be found on my website;

Relative to many of today's diseases and disorders, little is known about the etiology, the cause, and the long-term effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). The two disorders share a myriad of characteristics, however, which begs the question: Are they really two separate diseases? How does Myofascial Pain Syndrome fit in? What are the various pain expressions characteristic of each? How are symptoms the same or distinct from each other? Neck pain, back pain, and sciatica have been reported in all three conditions but in varying degrees of intensity and frequency. How are they the same and how are they different? We have already begun to explore the answers to these questions in previous articles, we will continue to do so in this and subsequent articles in this series.

There are many similarities between chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The course of both disorders is generally persistent and chronic, with symptoms arising steadily to a crescendo, often waxing and waning in cycles. Unfortunately, the prognosis is poor with little real understanding of the etiology or cause. Treatment strategies for both chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia are focused more on symptoms than on treating the perceived cause. Pain often varies from dull to acute, from fleeting to constant or chronic. Improvement is possible for those with the disorder(s), but complete recovery is rare. Most CFS and FMS sufferers continue to have symptoms for years, if not decades.

Sufferers of both CFS and FMS also seem to be susceptible to secondary psychological problems, such as depression, anxiety, and mood swings. The psychological and psychosomatic aspects of these conditions have not been lost on researchers, with much current research focusing on related psychological issues. It is also quite common for depression to become quite serious, as chronic fatigue symptoms and fibromyalgia pain take a heavy toll.

Treatment for both disorders, FMS and CFS, are often similar, if not the same. Increased occurrence has been demonstrated in blood relatives, suggesting a possible genetic component to the disorder. And, while certain segments of the population seem to be at greater risk, are more susceptible, both conditions are present in all demographic groups. However, the most susceptible demographic group, for both disorders, is women in their middle years, particularly women from 30 to 50 years of age. Symptoms of both fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome seem to worsen after exertion, demanding activity, and stress of all types (physical, cognitive or emotion).

When routine lab tests are conducted on patients with suspected CFS or FMS, the results quite often appear normal. Both disorders are extremely difficult to diagnose. CFS and FMS often overlap or are found jointly with other disorders and/or diseases such as allergies, tension headaches, migraines, irritable bladder, irritable bowel and autoimmune disorders.

Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia also share numerous abnormalities not commonly linked to other disorders. Some of the abnormalities or characteristics peculiar to CFS and FMS include central nervous system abnormalities (CNS), perhaps a reason for the various pain expressions and mood disorders, and lowered levels of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin, also with an impact on mood and pain, to include neck pain, back pain, deep hip and pelvis pain, and sciatica. Fibromyalgia sufferers in particular experience a decreased threshold for pain overall, at times localized and at other times diffuse and acute. Chronic fatigue patients will also suffer from idiosyncratic pain, diffuse and varied in its expression. Abnormalities also arise in each of the nervous system's two branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

FMS and CFS patients may also exhibit disorders affecting multiple body systems, the nervous system, as noted above, the circulatory system, particularly hypertension and heart-related problems (also a possible stress link) and digestive, as in ulcers and acid reflux (stress again) and endocrine (hormones also impacted by stress). Sleep abnormalities are considerable and widespread. Interestingly, brain imaging seems to indicate that blood flow wanes to some areas of the brain. Symptoms also appear to arise in patients' sensory processing, generating a higher sensitivity to sensory input (light, sound, chemicals) and, again, pain stimuli. To summarize, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia share a host of symptoms, ranging from neurological to gastrointestinal.

There are symptoms characteristic of each disease or disorder, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. For example, CFS presents a more powerful association or link with intolerance to exercise, greater fatigue, flu-like symptoms and vision changes. Symptoms found to be more prevalent in fibromyalgia include the presence of the particularly painful trigger and tender points and the presence of allodynia. Allodynia is the powerful triggering of pain responses for things that wouldn't be painful to an unaffected person. Physicians refer to a certain pain expression from movement or motion as "motion allodynia." Pain specialists refer to pain at a comfortable or normal temperature, temperature not uncomfortable to the most people, as "cold allodynia." Allodynia is often used by physicians to refer to neuropathic or "bizarre" pain, which presents as the result of any non-noxious stimuli, often "jumping around from affected to unaffected parts of the body.

Of the two disorders, CFS is being reported to be nearing or at epidemic levels, affecting many persons at the same time across a wide range of demographic groups. CFS symptoms wax and wane more frequently than symptoms of FMS, and the rate of disability is greater in chronic fatigue syndrome patients. Currently, we don't know what the direct (or indirect) connection is between chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Early research and speculation has suggested that they could possibly be distinct, meaning the two disorders are not related, identical, the same disorder, but with different names, overlapping, two diverse expressions of a similar disorder or possibly the result of different causes or triggers leading to a common pathway, two subtypes of a larger illness and part of a spectrum of illnesses, including both...and possibly Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Until further research is done, it is difficult to say with any degree of certainty.

I suffered from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue for 4 years before reaching a point where I am 90% better than I was at the beginning of the illness.

I will say from the outset that I believe this is one of the worst afflictions that can strike any person, at any age and at anytime.

Not only is it so debilitating that it now has the same disability rating assigned to heart disease patients, but at the same time you have to deal with negative connotations that surround it.

Even the name doesn't sound credible, "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome", "what is that like a bad hangover or something" people will say. At a time when you need the most support in your life, often, people are turning their backs and walking away or muttering under their breath. It is a frightful condition.

This will be a pivotal point in your life. You will find that during the course of your illness you will find out who your real friends are, and who really cares.

There is no point disguising the reality which is, I'm afraid to say, that you will lose a lot of friends and colleagues along the way to the monster that is Fibromyalgia and CFS.

It is NOT possible to explain this condition to people who have no experience of it either by having suffered, or through having a particular medical interest in the area. They WILL NOT understand what, or to what extent, you are suffering. Again, I'm afraid this is the norm. Accept it as such and you will not then be personally offended by acts of prejudice. Easier said than done I know. Let us examine a common sequence of events which may ring a bell with sufferers, to understand the prejudice from an outsider perspective.

You had a viral/ bacterial/ chemical exposure of unknown etiology, the same as happens to millions of people throughout America every day, and for some reason that no-one can explain to you, you have felt generally ill and exhausted with multiple symptoms and multi-systemic involvement ever since. Your doctor appears cynical and can't give you an adequate diagnosis so you may by now have been referred to a psychologist for analysis as a suspected depressive incident. "hmmm okay" you hear them mutter.

Ask yourself this question.

If you had no knowledge about Fibromyalgia and CFS what would your reaction be to someone else developing these symptoms?............ You see? Its human nature, it's cruel isn't it?

So how do we as sufferers cope and rationalize what is happening.

Knowledge is power. Educate yourself about your condition.

Concentrate on yourself and try not to dwell morbidly over the people that you have lost already. Those that do not stand by you, and there will be some, are what we term fair-weather friends, usually activity based they were your friends due to your common interest in a certain activity, be it sport/ work etc.

The activity has gone due to your illness, therefore by association so does the friendship, this is okay because we are going to get you to a stage where you can resume the activity, you can forgive those "acquaintances" if you wish and resume the activity with them, you will also be wiser and more aware of "the type" of friendship you have with this person.

What goes around come around and what is going around is that you are going to get better!!

There is a small consolation that I allow myself, and this is the level of self-knowledge and wisdom that you will gain from this painful journey. It's a small consolation I know and I hear most of you screaming, "it's wisdom and knowledge I could well do without", but it is there and when you do come out the other side in the following weeks and months what you have been through will make you ten times the person you were before.

You have plumbed the depths of pain and despair and in the future you will be scaling the heights. If you come through this nothing in life will phase you again. You will value the simple things in life. You will live every day. You will scoff at the vanities and selfishness of our systems and culture.

Fibromyalgia and CFS will create emotional havoc for you and for your loved ones. This is normal.

Becoming chronically ill is very much like a bereavement. The losses and emotions involved are very similar. Giving up works means not only that you lose income but you also lose status, friendship and a purposeful role in life.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome encompass the full range of human emotions and magnify the negative ones ten-fold.

This disease really is a monster. The usual response is to want to hide away from the world. However, confronting these emotions can be very important as part of your psychological rehabilitation which should be addressed in conjunction with the manual therapy discussed later.

This really is an area where a healthy mind can assist a healthy body towards better recovery.

The pain that comes with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be frightening and this in itself can cause fear, loneliness, isolation, panic and anxiety.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can create a fear of rejection by others even when there is no evidence of this happening. I mean, who wants to be around someone who is like this, we say to ourselves.

Again this is a normal reaction, our self esteem is based on what others think of us, and usually that is based on what we "do" or "how we play" , or "what we say", generally how we interact with other people. As we take to "doing less", "playing" less and generally interacting "saying" less, then our self esteem plummets along with our health.

We are worried about the future; the dark shadow of uncertainty is round every corner. Will I ever get better? What if I don't? How long is this going to go on? We ask these questions every day. We begin to experience life in a shadow land. Our hopes and dreams have been shattered and the road ahead can be bleak and never ending.

Anger is very common emotion - Why me? - Why now? - What have I ever done to deserve this? Unfortunately this anger alienates those we love even more.

You will find supportive people, often, and encouragingly the last people you would expect. Those who are supportive are often people, or those close to them, who have experienced serious illness and are living with it, or have come through it.

Or, those who have experienced Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or have someone close to them who has it. These are the people you should aim to spend your limited energy resources building relationships with for the moment.

Do not feel bitter towards people who you lose at this stage, hold on while you can then just let them go lightly, they are not your problem. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome IS your problem, and fighting it hard is your duty to yourself, to get your health back, for you and your loved ones. You are going to need the energy you have left for this fight.

I do advocate counseling and support groups. You will need to find someone who has specific knowledge about the emotional effects of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, again a good doctor should be able to put you on the right path, there are also Fibromyalgia and CFS support groups based in most cities and towns across the US.

Once you have found a good support group you will also find good counseling.

However, the majority of cases will NOT need to see a psychologist unless you are being referred for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as your illness is NOT depression, and therefore you should not accept anti-depressants, with the exception of possibly low dose amitriptyline if your symptoms include severe nervous pain and sleep disturbance.

However I cannot personally vouch for this but there is enough evidence to suggest is a valid treatment.

Mental and emotional preparation, knowledge of your condition, and the correct course of treatment are all essential and work symbiotically to assist your recovery.

In my next article I will explain new research which is allowing us to determine how genetic and biomechanical anomalies, predispose certain individuals to attacks of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The rise in the diagnosis of chronic disease in the country over the past 10 years is staggering. We are at an all time low in our placement in the world in our health. Statistically, we are 37th out of the 39 first world countries in overall health as a nation in the United States. As far as I am concerned in being a 30 year veteran of the health care industry, this is pathetic. The worst part about it is the fact that most of the chronic diseases from which Americans suffer are totally avoidable!! The chronic diseases of which I speak are brought on mostly by poor lifestyle choices and bad decisions regarding what we eat, what we drink, whether or not we exercise, and how toxic our environment is. We set ourselves up for chronic diseases tomorrow by the lifestyle choices we make today.

In this article, I would like to discuss a topic that plagues our society- so much so that it has been given its own diagnostic code in the national index of diseases and conditions. The condition that I am referring to is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. So many Americans suffer from the condition that we call chronic fatigue and an ongoing state of low energy that it is astounding. Chronic Fatigue is a debilitating combination of symptoms and problems associated with having to do with the lack of energy. You've lost your "zip" and your "get up and go" has gotten up and went!! Does this sound familiar? If so, read on, because there is hope!

This is a very complex topic, one I could spend hours teaching on, or writing about in an entire series of articles, so I will do my best to simplify it for you. I will briefly describe several of the leading causes of fatigue or lack of energy, and then try to provide some simple steps to apply toward improving your overall state of health and your energy levels.

Fatigue, tiredness, and low vitality are the most common symptoms for which people seek medical care. In other words, more people go to doctors in an attempt to solve their lack of energy issues than they do for pain! A recent survey found that 25% of all adults who use doctors and clinics to treat them, answered the survey question of "How often do you feel tired" with the response that they "ALWAYS feel tired". 25% is an astounding percentage!

First and foremost is the importance of an accurate diagnosis to determine the cause of your fatigue. This must be based on a series of examinations and tests coupled with discussions of your history and lifestyle to assist the doctor or specialist in making a specific assessment and diagnosis. The doctor will then have the appropriate information from which to make recommendations to help you on the road to recovery from this common condition that plagues so many Americans.

Let's talk about a few of the major causes of chronic fatigue and low energy levels. One of the most common is a deficiency in the vitamins and/or minerals necessary for the body to function the way that it should. Many might say "but Dr. Bolan, I eat three square meals a day. Isn't that enough to provide the vitamins and minerals that my body needs?" The answer is NO! In this day and age of our highly processed and refined foods, especially the "junk foods" that most Americans are so fond of, most of the nutritional value has been completely lost. They are not only devoid of any nutritional value, these foods actually REQUIRE more energy to digest and process in the body than they actually give back in return! This is what we refer to as "empty calories" or "negative calorie foods".

The packaged, boxed, and canned foods that most people live on in our society are devoid of most of the vitamins and minerals contained in foods that are closer to their natural state such as raw fruits and vegetables. Even then, you would have to eat more of the right kinds of foods than you may want to due to our soils being depleted of their valuable contents through over planting, fertilizers, and failure to let the land "rest" every few years like the Bible describes. Farmers are pressured to produce more than the land can yield year after year, and this has robbed our soils of the vitamins and minerals necessary for good health.

Let me give you a prime example of what I am talking about. A research project was conducted in the fruit farming industry. When the results came in, even those conducting the research were astounded. They were studying the nutritional value of an ordinary peach today as compared to the nutritional value contained in a peach 40 years ago. For those of us "baby boomers" forty years ago just isn't that long ago! What they found is that ONE peach forty years ago had enough nutritional value contained inside, that today would require you to consume 54 peaches to get the same value!! 54 peaches compared to 1 peach in nutritional value and benefit from just 40 years of having depleted our soils and overproduced our crops.

Another primary cause of Chronic Fatigue syndrome is living under a level of stress greater than the body and mind can handle sustained over a long period of time. Stress, whether mental or physical, robs the body of vital energy reserves. You can think of it this way- under stress your body has to work much harder than it is supposed to just to accomplish our normal daily activities. There are only so many "energy units" to go around for each day, and once they are used up, your body is literally running on "empty". You can have a great engine in your car, but without having high grade fuel in the tank, the car won't run. Stress robs the body of the energy reserves that would normally exist, so that when you need them, they just aren't available. Your body then makes you aware of this energy reserve depletion by allowing you to "feel tired" so that you will go rest or lay down to replenish your energy reserves. The problem is that being under high stress over a long period of time causes your body to lose the ability to "refill your tanks" by simply resting.

Physical inactivity and the lack of proper exercise can also result in a state of low energy as well. This is a "catch 22" situation because you might ask "How can I become more active to offset my low energy when I am too tired to add even one more activity to my day?" It is a fair question and one that I hear daily from those who seek my counsel on health and healing. The problem is that without consistent cardiovascular exercise to stimulate your heart and circulation and to provide life-giving oxygen to your cells, the entire body becomes sluggish and does not get the vital nutrition to the cells that they so desperately need. Without proper circulation, the waste products in your cells back up and get clogged making them very inefficient producers of energy.

Over time, this inefficient production of energy adds up and results in further depletion of the reserves that your body needs to draw from when required by increased activity or higher levels of stress. It starts to use your reserves of energy for performing normal daily activities which further drains the tanks as I mentioned earlier. Combine this with eating foods that don't replace the nutrients that your body is craving and the viscous cycle spins out of control and feeds on itself in a very destructive way.

Other causes of Chronic Fatigue include such things as food allergies, being overweight, overuse of antibiotics, prescription drugs side effects, chemical toxicity, heart disease, thyroid trouble, elevated cholesterol, depression, and many, many others. Any or all of these are capable of being diagnosed or ruled out by the testing I was describing earlier in the article. If you suspect that you may be experiencing any of these, tell the doctor during your consultation and history review so they can run the appropriate tests to help you in the best, most accurate way available.

In the meantime, let's address some practical solutions regarding a few of the most common causes of Chronic Fatigue that I mentioned in this introductory article. The first is very simple and something that everyone on our planet should make it a point of implementing. That is taking a high potency multivitamin and multi-mineral supplement with each meal. You can think of it in terms of "health insurance" and prevention. It is an investment in making sure that your body gets all of the nutrients and "fuel" necessary to run at peak performance in addition to the foods that you eat. Or for some of you, I would have to say BECAUSE of the foods that you eat! But that is another article. The source of the nutritional vitamin and mineral supplement is important. You must make sure that the nutrients in the product that you are taking are capable of being absorbed by the body. If you have questions regarding which supplement to take, you can contact me personally at my email address or go to your local health food store and ask one of the clerks that are knowledgeable in this area. They are usually more than happy to help educate you in this area.

To offset and manage the effects of stress, nothing is any more important than a properly functioning nerve system. As many of you know, the Chiropractor specializes in the nerve system working at peak efficiency. A condition known as subluxation prevents the nerve system from working properly and thus causes the body to malfunction. It makes you more susceptible to the effects of stress. The solution is simple- go to a qualified Chiropractor and have your body checked for the presence of subluxation. There is no guessing involved. You either have this condition in your spine and nerve system or you don't. If you don't, great! If you have subluxation, the Chiropractor is the only health professional capable of finding and correcting this condition which can rob you of the vital energy needed in your nerve system to be the best you can be.

With regard to physical activity and the lack of proper exercise, this could come in the form of something as simple as walking or riding a stationary bicycle for 20-30 minutes a day. The key is consistency. You must find enough energy initially to commit to this type of exercise knowing that you are investing in the bank of building energy reserves. The payoff comes in as little as 30-60 days when instead of making you more tired, it provides a significant boost in your vitality, giving you what you the energy you need to make it through the day with greater ease! You'll wonder how you ever got along without this type of activity.

The last point that I will make in this article is probably one of the most important health topics that you will ever read about. It has been proven time and time again by a myriad of clinical research that the NUMBER ONE CAUSE of up to 90% of ALL Chronic Fatigue is mild dehydration. Our bodies and our cells are made up of over 70% water, so there is no other area of your health that is more important than making sure you are drinking enough water on a daily basis.

That's right. Simply not drinking enough good, clean, purified water is the number one cause of fatigue which is the number one reason why most people seek medical intervention for the symptoms or health problems that they are experiencing. Mild dehydration is said to be present in over 85% of all Americans on a daily basis! That is an astounding statistic! Just by drinking enough water during the day (which 99% of the population does NOT) you can virtually eliminate fatigue from your life.

Now, don't get me wrong. It is not enough to simply drink enough water. It has to be a very high quality of water. You can't go to the tap in our society today and get good, clean, pure water any longer. Our municipal water sources are full of toxins, poisons, all the drugs that people throw down their toilets, bacteria, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals that you don't want to know about. Yes, the chlorine they put in the water at the local municipal plant kills most of the bacteria, but it does nothing for the other things in our water supply listed above. Fish and frogs are mutating in our streams and creeks that feed our water supplies because of all the drugs and chemicals in our water!

Bottled water may be a start, but since this is not an area of commerce regulated by the FDA, you have to be careful of the source of your water. Many of you have read that the company Dasani was caught putting tap water into their bottles and labeling it as "purified water". Test your bottled water by adding a few chlorine detection drops that you can get from a swimming pool supply store and see if the water that you are drinking is as "healthy" as it claims to be.

By far the best and most cost-effective solution is to have your own purification water unit in your home. They are very cost effective and over a year's period of time, it would more than pay for itself in the money that it saves you in having to buy your water one bottle at a time. Do your homework and decide which unit you feel best serves the needs of your family, but GET YOUR OWN WATER PURIFIER in your home! Many of the top companies offer financing options that allow you to make monthly installments or payments to help make it more affordable.

Don't trust what you are being "sold" by commercial television about the quality of the water you are drinking from their bottles. This is just too important to put your trust in a marketing campaign instead of knowing for yourself that you are getting the highest quality water available today. Invest in a home unit and you'll be glad you did. Your body will thank you for it!
